About me

My name is Adam Skierkowski. I am a systems engineer for whom the foundation of IT is independence and full control over data. I optimize, secure, and manage infrastructure based on proven technologies - mainly virtualization and containerization. New technologies are my natural environment and an unflagging passion. I don't take my foot off the gas when faced with technical challenges - I assume that the next mountain to climb is not an obstacle, but merely something that temporarily obscures a horizon of new possibilities.

Work

I have been involved in the IT industry for over two decades. My domain includes networks, deployments, training, and servicing advanced industry-specific software. For most of this time, I have been responsible for Prepress systems in the printing industry (Agfa and ECO3 workflow environments), ensuring the operation of over 200 installations in Poland and Central Europe. Before specializing in printing solutions, I gained experience as an IT Manager, managing diverse, hybrid organizations - bringing Windows, Linux, macOS, and AS400 mainframe environments together into a functioning whole.

HomeLab

Homelab Infrastructure

Outside of work, I operate at the intersection of software and hardware:

  • Infrastructure, Network & Security: The core of my homelab is a Proxmox cluster (virtual machines and LXC containers) complemented by a Docker environment. The network edge and traffic are managed by an OPNsense firewall paired with a Traefik reverse proxy and Cloudflare tunnels, while AdGuard handles blocking unwanted traffic. I achieve secure remote access and credential management through my own instances of RustDesk and Vaultwarden, and navigation across the entire ecosystem of services is provided by a dashboard built on Homer.
  • Private Cloud & Media: I am gradually "de-Googling" my life, and Nextcloud has become the central hub for my files and data. Paperless-ngx serves as my digital document archive (OCR), I keep track of hardware and home inventory in Homebox, and my private photo library is managed by Immich. My home entertainment center is based on independent services: Jellyfin streams video, Navidrome handles music, and Audiobookshelf manages my collection of audiobooks.
  • System Monitoring: The stability and performance of the entire architecture are overseen by a Prometheus and Grafana stack, supported by Uptime Kuma for ongoing service status monitoring. This gives me a full overview of system metrics, hardware health, and network traffic in real time.
  • Private AI Stack: I experiment with local language models. I have deployed my own LibreChat instance based on LiteLLM, integrated with a local RAG system and a vector database.
  • Smart Home & Audio: I have built a cohesive smart home ecosystem based on Home Assistant OS, integrating lighting automation and a wide range of sensors - including temperature, flood, motion, and presence sensors. Home audio is managed by a fully integrated multi-room audio network (Lyrion, Music Assistant, Fosi Audio hardware stack).

Hobby

My everyday passions:

  • Music: The full spectrum - from classical music through progressive rock, electronic, and hip-hop, all the way to metal. ;-)
  • Photography: I enjoy taking photos and collecting memories, primarily in digital form. Sometimes this takes the form of multimedia presentations for various occasions.
  • Literature: I read a lot and listen to audiobooks. Perfect for long walks with the dog.
  • DIY & Tinkering: I don't limit myself solely to code. With the same dedication, I built a cottage on my plot with a complete electrical installation, integrated gate automation with a video intercom, and undertook the implementation of custom multimedia in my car, connecting it directly to the CAN-bus.
